Carolyn McCall named Ashridge leader of the year Hult Blog

Originally released on November 26, 2015. Carolyn McCall OBE, Chief Executive of easyJet, was last night named the winner of the Ashridge Executive Education Leader of the Year at the 2015 Lloyds Bank National Business Awards gala dinner ceremony, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane. The award recognises the personal impact of the UK’s most high profile leaders on the culture and success of their organizations and the industries they operate in. Carolyn joined easyJet on July 2010 as Chief Executive Officer. Since joining, her strategic focus has resulted in a series of milestone events including reaching the landmark of carrying 65m passengers annually and attracting more business travelers. Under Carolyn’s leadership easyJet has consistently exceeded City expectations. 2012 saw the company achieving record profits and in 2013 the company entered the FTSE 100. Carolyn was unable to attend the awards as she was involved in Easyjet’s 20th anniversary celebratory events; upon hearing the news, Carolyn left a video acceptance speech and said: â€Å"Thank you very much for those of you that have voted for me as the Ashridge Business School Leader of the Year. It’s a really lovely thing to receive, I’m very pleased but I’m really pleased on behalf of the people at Easyjet, I think that they really deserve it, they work very, very hard to make travel easy and affordable for all our passengers and that is why this prestigious Lloyds Bank National Business Award has been awarded to me and therefore Easyjet so thank you all very much indeed.† Carolyn was chosen as the winner by a ballot of over 40 business leaders including Dame Helen Alexander, Chairman of UBM plc; Ronan Dunne, CEO of Telefonica UK; Moya Greene, CEO of Royal Mail and winner of last year’s Leader of the Year award, and Martina Milburn CBE, Chief Executive of The Princes Trust. Judges looked at how these leaders have demonstrated the best balance between traditional board values and the new business environment – achieving measured and sustainable growth or driving improved performance. Kai Peters, Chief Academic Officer of Ashridge and Hult International Business School, said: The achievements of Carolyn in the five years she has been at EasyJet have been outstanding. She arrived amidst managerial and financial challenges and has impressively grown the airline through dedication, hard work and a sense of fun. Amazingly, she has achieved all of this from a standing start as an outsider to the aviation industry.† Over 1200 business leaders, entrepreneurs, politicians and media representatives gathered at the Grosvenor House Hotel for the 14th annual National Business Awards. The Awards were presented by Sky News’ Ian King and Poppy Trowbridge and welcomed former Astronaut and second man on the moon, Buzz Aldrin as headline speaker. The Prime Minister opened proceedings at the ceremony with a message for this year’s finalists. He told the audience: â€Å"I want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you on behalf of the whole country, for all that you’re doing to create jobs and growth in Britaintonight we celebrate all that you’re doing, from your leadership in digital and innovation, to the Duke of York’s new award for University Entrepreneurship, these awards are rightly the Oscars of great British business. â€Å"The awards recognise people who have the guts to strike out on their own, who have the tenacity to work hard for every deal and who have the innovation and vision that lets you grow your business and take new people on. I learned a lot about myself and how I deal with being out of my comfort zone. I learned both soft and hard skills, from how to work in very diverse teams to key accounting metrics and strategy. I was surprised by how weak I was at certain tasks in English or how strong I actually was in other areas. Hult gave me opportunities to try new things and meet people from places I never thought I would have friends. . My internship experiences gave me the chance to broaden my view of different cultures and different companies. I had the opportunity to work and live with people whose values differed from people in my home country. I thought that this would be difficult, but it gave me the chance to reflect on my own values and assess if they were a result of my home country environment or if they were intrinsically mine. . It taught me a lot about how I see people, how people see me, and how conflict can be resolved in a kind and productive way. The best feedback you get, when delivered constructively, is the most critical because it really feeds into how you lead. I’ve completely reversed my leadership style—the result is so much richer and more powerful when you lead from behind and lead with strength. . Studying in tandem with working, whilst challenging, gave me the perfect platform to directly apply learning concepts into my business environment, the competitive landscape, and the real-estate industry as a whole. When I started the program, I was very happy in my corporate role. But my courage and aspirations grew to the point that I took on a whole new direction. Having my career coach, Joanna, as a sounding board allowed me to really be strategic and get to know myself. She coached me thro ugh all the interviews, the research, and the questions. It went in parallel with what I was doing academically and after six months everything just clicked. . I went into the EMBA knowing I had nothing to lose and I’ve come out with everything. Great strength, global friends, amazing learning, mentors from professors, a job I love, and the knowledge that I can set my mind to achieve anything and with the right support and resources I’ll get there.† . I knew that I’d have likely stayed in my neighborhood for years to come if I didn’t take this opportunity. I’d not lived or studied outside of the U.S. before. So I left my job as a global strategist at an advertising agency and moved halfway around the world. I’ve come back a more culturally aware, well-versed person. I’ve realized that everything is a learning experience and an opportunity for growth. Ill definitely carry this mindset with me into the future. Technology and social media allow us to be different people in several places at once. Im excited to see how I can establish myself in whatever city Ill be lucky enough to call home and still maintain deep connections with people all over the world. I’m inspired by my classmates every day. Hearing some of their life stories and how getting this degree fits into their greater mission has been very humbling. My biggest challenge has been finding the ‘right’ path for me. There have been rooms Ive felt like I shouldnt be in, but now Im proud to feel as though I truly belong, wherever I am.† .
